What you describe in terms of quality sounds pretty similar to other bike share systems I've tried. And I agree about cycling in some areas of Boston. My sister and her husband were visiting from DC and their impression of Boston was that "you'd have to be crazy to cycle here."Velouriahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00359329171411037482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8356723782465446786.post-50388096209163998052011-08-08T11:16:36.578-04:002011-08-08T11:16:36.578-04:00I wouldn't say that "there was no thought...I wouldn't say that "there was no thought at all" for bike facilities on the Greenway. I recall some advocacy traffic around it, but it got sidelined with a sop of "well,we'll just make the outside lane extra wide to give cyclists room to maneuver (but won't mark it as a bike lane)." so, yeah, thought given just prior to it being dismissed as inconsequential. :\

I haven't used Hubway yet (though I eagerly look forward to the day that stations show up at Inman) but it does seem almost identical to the Bixi, which I thought were decent enough bikes and, at least, sufficient reason for me to leave my bikes at home when visiting Montreal. Did you have problems with getting it to dock in properly?

I think, one argument for the front racks is that it's easier to monitor and adjust the placement a package or load on that rack, especially if a rider doesn't have a habit of carrying their own bungees.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8356723782465446786.post-31060438118729284322011-08-08T10:27:23.200-04:002011-08-08T10:27:23.200-04:00due to the rain yesterday, i was downtown without ...due to the rain yesterday, i was downtown without a bike. walking on newbury street, i saw the setup and thought about taking it for a spin and riding back towards jamaica plain. in the end, my thirst for a beer won over my curiosity of the hubway.

and i'm with you on the lack of bike anything on the greeway. travesty!JPTwinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10348686531981776474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8356723782465446786.post-51509274665522207522011-08-08T06:05:11.427-04:002011-08-08T06:05:11.427-04:00I think the program is a good idea and don't w...I think the program is a good idea and don't want to be too critical of the bikes but why a front rack ? A rear rack or basket would have been a better choice, IMO. Almost everyone who would use them, commuter and tourist alike, would probably be carrying something that would need to go on the bike. Maybe they could retrofit something ?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8356723782465446786.post-35879355059545601352011-08-07T11:54:46.113-04:002011-08-07T11:54:46.113-04:00As a slow rider I agree that going slow stops me f...As a slow rider I agree that going slow stops me from feeling comfortable doing full on VC. The cars are slowed down by congestion and frequent lights. I think though that if I could only go 8mph, and was holding them up, they'd start to honk, tailgate and generally display anti-social behaviour.cyclerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10331461189944538729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8356723782465446786.post-18204575178744782572011-08-07T07:58:10.594-04:002011-08-07T07:58:10.594-04:00Out of curiosity, why would the gearing relate to ...Out of curiosity, why would the gearing relate to the suitability of the bikes for vehicular operation? Even if you ride fast, motorists still think that's slow. If you are riding slow, impression and reality are not as far apart. I'd like such a program in Fort Worth. As you did, I'd use them as loaners when my main bike is getting work done.Steve Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13650405341304401203noreply@blogger.com
