A dialog

Scientist:   Where did those giant boards in the dining room come from?

Cycler:  I got them to build a mounting plate for the new AC unit.

Scientist:  Did you scavenge them somewhere?

Cycler:  No, I got them at Home Depot yesterday.

Scientist:   On your bike?!?

Cycler:  Sure, on my bike, how else?

Scientist:  Rolls eyes.

  2. I don't get why people roll their eyes that way in response to accomplishments that others get satisfaction from. My wife responded similarly when she learned that I brought home three LARGE boxes for packing (since we're moving soon). I brought them home on a tandem pulling a trailer, and frankly was quite proud. Although she didn't roll her eyes, she clearly couldn't understand why I would have derived satisfaction from that.

  3. Somervillian, He didn't really roll his eyes, but he does think I'm a little crazy sometimes for not just asking to borrow his car.. He's down with the transportation cycling thing, he just looks at that pile of boards and doesn't think- Sure, I can carry those on a bike.

Wheras, I approach things mostly from a "how else am I going to carry them?" approach.

  4. Good for you! Sadly, this would be completely illegal in my city.

  5. I find large objects are also quite effective at persuading motorists not to pass too closely (such as medium sized ladders).

Of course, my approach is also, why wouldn't I carry it on the bicycle?
